Updated and simplified pertussis testing in primary care

Further to the recent correspondence regarding pertussis testing in primary care on the 20th May 2024, we have updated and simplified our testing pathway, in order to improve the turnaround times of results.

The latest guidance from UKHSA available for diagnosis is available here:

Please note that the recommended swab type for pertussis testing is using a pernasal swab. If you would like to get hold of pernasal swabs, please ring 0116-2586538 or email Email

The laboratory tests (PCR and/or culture) for pertussis is as follows, dependant on what swab types you have available at your practice:

  1. One pernasal swab for pertussis PCR or
  2. One throat swab in viral transport medium (VTM) for pertussis PCR or
  3. One ‘dry’ throat or nasopharangeal swab in sterile universal container for pertussis PCR or
  4. One nasopharangeal swab in charcoal medium for culture (please note that this would take longer than PCR therefore would be the last preference)

Please ensure that the request form comes with clinical details such as ‘pertussis suspected’ or ‘pertussis-like symptoms’.

Please note that nose swabs (in any medium/swab type/container) and throat swabs in charcoal medium are unsuitable for pertussis testing and will be rejected.
