Update on Death Registrations

The Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages office are currently preparing for the next phase of death registrations for any deaths occurring in Leicestershire.

We intend to move to the electronic transfer of Medical Cause of death certificates between Surgeries, Hospitals and our service and to undertake death registrations by phone with effect from Monday 30th March 2020. It is up to each district to decide when it is appropriate for them to move over to this method so you may have different arrangements with other registration services.

We have set up a dedicated email address for the duration of these special measures which will be leicsdeathreg@leics.gov.uk

This procedure will be implemented from Monday 30th March.

To help us with this process we need the email address that you will be using to send the Medical Cause of Death to us, a list of all of your doctors with their GMC number a direct phone number that we can contact your surgery if any queries arise.

Emails accompanying MCCD from doctors, should if possible also contain agreed contact details for proposed informants. This will enable us to quickly make a telephone appointment and ensure all deaths are registered.

Please retain the original certificates as you are required to give them to the registration service once the pandemic is over. Instructions will be issued in due course on how this will happen.

It is up to each district to decide when it is appropriate for them to move over to this method so you may have different arrangements from other registration services that you deal with. Please note that deaths occurring in Leicester City hospitals are registered by Leicester City rather than Leicestershire

The sooner we can put these measures in place, the safer we will all be.

When replying, please reply to this email address leicsdeathreg@leics.gov.uk
