NHS Continuing Healthcare needs checklist

The LMC has been advised of practices being told that they must carry out the NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) Needs Checklist.

If a patient is awarded CHC then they may be eligible for full payment of their care, including, for example, paying fees for a care home, so the decision has a significant impact on our patient.

General Practitioners are not contracted, funded, nor normally trained to undertake the CHC Needs Checklist. There is also a conflict of interest, and the doctor-patient relationship could be undermined. If a patient is already under the care of a District Nursing team they should arrange the checklist, otherwise the assessment should be arranged by social services. If anyone tries to force you to undertake the Checklist, please let us know.
